Iyengar Centers of Nashville
at 12South and South11:
Words from Our Students...
"Practicing yoga and especially practicing at 12South Yoga has transformed my life. Besides providing a sense of family and community, the teachers and students at 12South yoga have provided a wonderful environment for me to coninue my journey of emotional and physical growth. I have learned that I don't have to ride my bike 50 miles a day to stay in shape, and that practicing yoga not only enables me to stay physically strong and active, but literally quiets the mind, enabling me in my personal and professional life. I have become a much calmer and centered person and yoga has become a central part of my life."

"To me yoga is the gate to my physical and mental well-being. It keeps me grounded and is a path for healing both the body and the soul. I enjoy the precision of Iyengar yoga and the emphasis on both mindfullness and accuracy. Each asana opens a door, sometime a simple easing of the pain from too much sitting at the office; other days it opens the door to things much bigger and more profound. Yoga practice is one way to heal and strengthen the body, but it also brings with this a practice that opens and centers the mind.
Aretha sees both important aspects of the practice of yoga. Her commitment to Iyengar practice teaches us to be thoughtful and kind to our bodies, hopefully to the world about us as well. On the practical side I love how over the years I have seen how each asana is a building block on the same simple themes and how each is connected and the preparation for the next.
Oh, and I can touch my toes better than any other guy at the office!"

" The word yoga means to "yoke" or to "join" - so I suppose the word "union" is also appropriate.
Practicing Iyengar Yoga for many years has meant for me an increased union with life. To bring mindfulness into each asana is taught in Iyengar Yoga - and this in turn helps bring mindfulness into everyday activities - and thus a living in the moment/union with life. Mr. Iyengar says "To live spiritually is to live in the present moment." The paths of Yoga and Buddhism and their emphasis on mindfulness are never ending sources of wisdom for me, and I am forever grateful to all of my teachers at 12South for being part of my journey."

"The flexibility we gain in asana is the living symbol of the suppleness we gain in relation to life’s problems and challenges."
